Morning Commute Overview for Wednesday, January 21

Commuters in the Phoenix metropolitan area can expect a relatively stable morning on the primary freeway systems, following the successful completion of the Broadway Curve project last year. However, significant regional work zones and new traffic patterns in the West Valley and North Phoenix are the primary focus for drivers today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026. While the core of the I-10 corridor remains clear of major construction, localized restrictions are in place on US 60 and the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway.

Major Artery Updates: Surprise and North Phoenix

In the West Valley, drivers in the Surprise area should be aware of new traffic patterns at the intersection of US 60 (Grand Avenue) and 163rd Avenue. Following overnight work that concluded early this morning, a new protected left-turn signal is now operational. This change is part of the Phase 2 interchange improvements designed to alleviate congestion for those merging onto eastbound US 60. Although lane restrictions at this site were lifted at 5:00 a.m., motorists should remain alert for flaggers and final equipment staging nearby as the new turn lane configuration is finalized.

Further north, preparation is intensifying for the I-17 and Loop 303 interchange project. While major closures for the new freeway-to-freeway ramps are slated for later this month, travelers should utilize the recently opened second off-ramp lane on northbound I-17 leading to Loop 303. This added capacity is significantly reducing the typical bottlenecking seen during the morning rush. In Scottsdale, the Loop 101 Pima Freeway widening project between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive is nearing substantial completion. Expect minor shoulder work and some reduced speed limits as crews finalize lane markings and signage.

Regional Restrictions and Roadworks

  • State Route 187: Ongoing pavement rehabilitation continues on the Gila River Indian Community. Lane restrictions are in effect between I-10 and SR 87 through February.
  • SR 387 Casa Grande: Motorists should plan for lane restrictions between mileposts 4.53 and 4.65, which will remain active through Friday, January 23.
  • Loop 202 Santan Freeway: Widening projects between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive continue to have narrow lanes; however, no full closures are reported for the Wednesday morning peak.

Valley Metro and Public Transit Alerts

Public transport users should account for several long-term construction detours currently affecting local routes. Valley Metro has confirmed that Route 3 bus stops remain relocated due to ongoing construction on Van Buren Street. Additionally, Route 45 continues to experience service impacts between Dobson Road and Price Road. In Tempe, the Orbit Earth circulator is currently detoured away from Mill Avenue between 5th Street and Rio Salado Parkway. Commuters on the Rail A Line should also prepare for upcoming regional schedule adjustments set to take effect next Monday.

Commuter Safety and Weather

Weather conditions today feature increasing clouds with temperatures reaching the low 70s. Visibility is high, but with the sunset falling earlier in the winter months, evening commuters are reminded to check their headlights and watch for pedestrian traffic near the South Central Light Rail extension zones. As always, allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes if your route involves the 101 or 303 corridors in the North Valley.
