Incident unfolded during an early-morning traffic stop in the city’s west side

Two Phoenix police officers were taken to area hospitals early Wednesday after their marked patrol vehicle was struck by a suspect vehicle during a traffic stop near the 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road corridor, authorities said. Police described the officers’ injuries as non-life-threatening.

The sequence began shortly before 3 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2026, when officers on patrol in the area of 75th Avenue and Thomas Road observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Police said the officers attempted to catch up and initiate a stop as the vehicle continued west.

Investigators said the attempted stop culminated near 85th Lane and Pinchot Drive, an area northwest of 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road. At that location, police said the driver did not comply and attempted to flee.

Police say suspect vehicle turned around and struck the patrol unit

During the attempted escape, police said the suspect vehicle made a U-turn in a nearby cul-de-sac and then rammed the patrol car. The two officers inside were transported for medical evaluation and treatment.

Additional officers responded to the scene, and a driver and passenger were detained, police said. Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the two detainees, and investigators had not publicly detailed potential charges as the investigation continued Wednesday morning.

Road impacts and investigative next steps

Authorities indicated the area remained active during the investigation, with officers maintaining a perimeter as traffic restrictions were put in place nearby. Police have not publicly provided details on whether impairment, outstanding warrants, or other factors contributed to the driver’s actions.

Police described the officers’ injuries as minor and non-life-threatening, and said the investigation remained ongoing.

Investigators are expected to review evidence gathered at the scene, including vehicle damage patterns and any available video, and to determine whether the driver’s actions meet thresholds for felony-level allegations such as aggravated assault with a vehicle, unlawful flight, or criminal damage. Police have also not said whether either officer has been released from the hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video from the area around 85th Lane and Pinchot Drive around 3 a.m. is typically encouraged to contact law enforcement to assist investigators.
