South Phoenix shooting near 19th Avenue and Broadway leaves suspect dead and police officer injured

Incident and immediate response
A man died and a Phoenix police officer was injured during a shooting incident Monday night in south Phoenix, near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road. Police were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. following a report that a man had pointed a gun at his daughters.
Officers arriving in the area were directed to the man, who was located across the street in a park. Investigators said the man began leaving the area on a bicycle and was followed through nearby streets.
Pursuit, physical contact and discharge of a firearm
Police said the man rode a short distance, got off the bicycle, and ran toward a residence. Officers attempted to stop him using less-lethal tools, but those efforts did not work, authorities said.
During the encounter, a second officer tried to take the man into custody from behind using physical force. Police said the officer and the man fell forward to the ground, at which point the man’s gun discharged, striking both the man and the officer.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.
What is known, and what remains unclear
Authorities have not released the name of the man who died. No additional injuries were reported in the initial police account of the incident, and officials did not immediately provide details on the identities or ages of the man’s daughters referenced in the original call.
Police have not publicly detailed whether body-worn camera video captured the moment the gun fired, or whether the gun discharged during a struggle, an attempted detention, or another sequence of events. The department has characterized the matter as an ongoing investigation.
Investigation and next procedural steps
The case remains under investigation, which typically includes documentation of the initial call, witness interviews, forensic examination of the firearm involved, analysis of officer communications, and a review of any available video from police cameras and nearby surveillance systems.
- Forensics: examination of the weapon, spent casing, trajectory and proximity indicators
- Digital evidence: body-worn camera footage, dispatch audio, and any nearby security video
- Accountability process: internal review and any applicable administrative findings after the criminal investigation
Police have said additional information will be released as investigators determine the circumstances that led to the discharge of the gun and the resulting injuries.
