South Phoenix Fight Ends in Shooting, Sending Two People to Hospital and Prompting Police Arrest
What happened
A shooting that police said stemmed from an argument and ensuing fight left two people wounded in south Phoenix on a Monday afternoon, with an 18-year-old booked into jail as the suspected shooter.
The gunfire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. at a Circle K near 7th Street and Broadway Road. Responding officers found two gunshot victims: a 23-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman who was at the store as a customer. Both were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive, based on police characterizations of their injuries as non-life-threatening.
Investigation and arrests
Investigators said witnesses described a confrontation that began when the suspect and several other men arrived at the store and argued with the 23-year-old victim and another man. Police said the dispute escalated and shots were fired, striking the man who had been involved in the argument and the unrelated woman.
Police identified the suspected shooter as Naki Trussell, 18, and said he was located away from the scene and arrested without incident. He was booked on one count of aggravated assault and one count of second-degree attempted murder.
Police also said two additional men connected to the incident were arrested on unrelated warrants and taken to a juvenile correction center. Detectives assigned to the Phoenix Police Department’s Gang Unit continued the investigation.
What remains unclear
As of the latest available police account, investigators had not publicly detailed what triggered the initial argument, whether the participants knew each other beforehand, or what the sequence of actions was immediately before the shots were fired. Authorities also had not provided a public description of the weapon used or a precise count of rounds fired.
Why this case is being handled as a broader public-safety incident
The presence of an uninvolved bystander among the wounded underscores how quickly confrontations can endanger people not participating in the dispute. In this case, police said the woman who was shot had no connection to the argument and was simply inside the business as a customer when the gunfire erupted.
