Scheffler rebounds after opening 73 to keep his streak alive at TPC Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — Scottie Scheffler extended the PGA Tour’s longest active made-cut streak to 66 consecutive tournaments at the 2026 WM Phoenix Open, surviving an uncharacteristically difficult opening round and playing his way safely into the weekend with a second-round surge.

Scheffler opened Thursday at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course with a 2-over-par 73 that immediately put his streak in jeopardy. The round included five bogeys and a double bogey, with mistakes concentrated around the greens, and left the world No. 1 needing a low score Friday to avoid his first missed cut since August 2022.

He delivered on Friday with a 6-under 65, moving to 4-under par through 36 holes and inside the cut line. The bounce-back preserved a run that became the Tour’s longest active streak after Xander Schauffele’s separate stretch of 72 consecutive made cuts ended the previous week.

Two Japanese players set the pace after conditions improved

Scoring improved markedly in the second round, and the top of the leaderboard shifted to a pair of Japanese players. Ryo Hisatsune shot 63 on Friday to reach 11-under par and take the 36-hole lead, while two-time WM Phoenix Open champion Hideki Matsuyama posted 64 to sit one shot back at 10-under.

Matsuyama’s move included a fast start that carried him into contention early, reinforcing his long-running comfort at TPC Scottsdale. Behind the leaders, a group of contenders stacked up within a few shots, reflecting the volatility typical of an event where birdie runs are common and momentum can shift quickly.

A week that turned from dominance to damage control—then back to contention

Scheffler arrived in Arizona with strong early-season form, including a recent victory at The American Express, and he has a notable history at this tournament. But his Thursday round was a rare disruption: it snapped a long run of rounds at par or better and forced an immediate focus on making the cut rather than building an early challenge for the title.

Friday’s 65, however, reset the narrative competitively. While still several shots off the lead entering the weekend, Scheffler’s position at 4-under left him within reach if the leaders stumble and scoring remains available.

  • Scheffler’s streak: 66 straight made cuts on the PGA Tour
  • Opening round: 73 (+2), leaving little margin for error
  • Second round: 65 (-6), moving to 4-under for the tournament
  • 36-hole leaders: Ryo Hisatsune (-11) and Hideki Matsuyama (-10)

The weekend at the WM Phoenix Open is often defined by aggressive scoring and heightened pressure on a course that can yield both birdie streaks and costly mistakes.

With the cut secured, attention now turns to whether Scheffler can convert a rescue mission into a full-scale weekend run, while Hisatsune and Matsuyama attempt to hold their ground at the top in one of the PGA Tour’s most scrutinized and energetic stops.
