Phoenix Sky Harbor Restarts Free Early Bag Check, Letting Travelers Drop Luggage Before Terminals

Service expands off-terminal bag drop options for eligible airlines
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has brought back its free Early Bag Check program, allowing departing passengers on select airlines to check luggage before reaching the terminals. The goal is to reduce congestion at traditional ticket counters and help travelers move through the airport without carrying large bags onto the PHX Sky Train.
The program’s relaunch, announced this week, re-establishes off-terminal baggage acceptance at two locations commonly used by travelers arriving by rental car or parking in economy facilities.
Where travelers can check bags
Rental Car Center: Passengers returning vehicles can check bags after completing the rental return process and before taking the PHX Sky Train to the terminals.
East Economy Parking: Travelers parking in East Economy can check bags before boarding the PHX Sky Train.
Airport materials also highlight that Early Bag Check is integrated into the PHX Sky Train-accessed travel flow, aiming to shift part of the check-in process away from terminal lobbies.
Airlines included and what “free” means
Early Bag Check is available to passengers flying on Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United. The airport describes the service itself as free, meaning there is no additional airport charge to use Early Bag Check; however, standard airline baggage fees and rules still apply.
The program limits travelers to up to two checked bags per person through Early Bag Check. Items categorized as special equipment are not processed through the off-terminal counters and must be handled at airline ticket counters in the terminals.
Hours and timing rules
The Early Bag Check counters are scheduled to operate daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., including holidays. Travelers can also print boarding passes at the Early Bag Check locations.
Checked-bag timing requirements follow common airline acceptance windows used at Sky Harbor: luggage must be checked at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure and no more than four hours before the flight. Those cutoffs matter because bags accepted too late may not make it onto the aircraft, while bags offered too early may be outside handling windows.
Early Bag Check is designed to let travelers reach security with fewer stops, shifting bag drop away from terminal ticket counters.
How it changes the departure routine
For travelers using the Rental Car Center or East Economy Parking, Early Bag Check can move one of the most time-consuming steps—bag drop—earlier in the trip sequence. After checking bags, travelers proceed to the terminals via the PHX Sky Train and continue with security screening and gate access as usual. The service does not replace TSA screening or airline check-in requirements; it changes where and when checked luggage is accepted.
Airport officials recommend that passengers still plan around peak travel periods and ensure they arrive early enough to meet baggage and security timelines.
