Freeway and Major Construction Updates

Commuters in the West Valley should prepare for significant travel impacts today, Wednesday, February 4, 2026. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), major lane restrictions are in effect along 75th Avenue near the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway). The stretch of 75th Avenue between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive has been narrowed to a single through lane in each direction. This restriction is part of the ongoing $140 million Loop 101 widening project and is expected to cause heavy delays during peak morning and evening hours. Commuters are advised to use 67th or 83rd avenues as alternate north-south routes.

Additionally, travelers heading to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from the west should allow for extra travel time. Roadway work on East Sky Harbor Boulevard is currently causing congestion at the airport's west entrance. This work is scheduled to continue through the end of today, potentially impacting those catching mid-week flights or handling airport pickups.

Waste Management Phoenix Open Traffic

Congestion remains high in the North Phoenix and Scottsdale areas as the Waste Management Phoenix Open continues at TPC Scottsdale. With the tournament running through February 9, heavy traffic is expected on the Loop 101 Pima Freeway, specifically between the SR-51 and Pima Road/Princess Drive. Traffic officials recommend that attendees use the dedicated park-and-ride shuttles to avoid the most severe gridlock. If you are not heading to the tournament, avoid the Scottsdale Road and Hayden Road corridors near the Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard intersection if possible.

Public Transit and Transit Equity Day

Today marks Transit Equity Day, a national observance honoring the legacy of Rosa Parks. While Valley Metro provides regular service, commuters are encouraged to check for special announcements or community events related to this day. There are several active rider alerts to keep in mind:

  • Route 170: Special detours and service adjustments are in place to support the Waste Management Phoenix Open through February 9.
  • Route 136: A construction-related detour remains active between Brown Road and the Gilbert/McDowell Park and Ride through February 5.
  • Route 45: Ongoing construction continues to impact stops between Dobson Road and Price Road.

Local Street Closures

Within the city, utility work is concluding today on 15th Avenue between Clarendon and Weldon Avenues. This partial closure is expected to be cleared by the end of the day, but drivers should remain cautious of remaining crews. In the West Valley, the second phase of the Interstate 10 widening project south of Phoenix continues. While most major closures for this project are scheduled for nights and weekends, the presence of work zones and narrowed lanes may cause minor slowing between Phoenix and Casa Grande.

Looking Ahead

ADOT has announced that resurfacing work on a 10-mile stretch of State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) is set to begin in early March. While today's commute is unaffected, drivers who regularly use the 51 between I-10 and Shea Boulevard should begin planning for upcoming weekend closures and diamond grinding operations that will continue through the spring.
