Fire crews upgraded response as smoke and flames were reported in a four-unit, single-story building

Eleven residents were displaced after an apartment fire early Saturday near 7th Street and Roosevelt in central Phoenix. Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. to reports of flames inside a single-story apartment building.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and visible fire coming from a window of one unit. Given the size of the structure and the possibility that multiple residents could still be inside, commanders upgraded the incident to a first-alarm response, bringing additional firefighters and apparatus to the scene.

Firefighters advanced hose lines into the building to knock down the main body of fire while other personnel conducted door-to-door checks of all four units to confirm occupants had evacuated. Crews also worked to prevent extension, successfully keeping the fire from spreading to a nearby building.

No injuries reported; investigator working to determine ignition source

No residents or firefighters were reported injured. The fire’s cause had not been released as of the latest official update, and the investigation remained active.

While the fire was contained to the building, the impact on residents was significant. Fire, heat, and smoke can render multiple units uninhabitable even when flames are limited to a single apartment, particularly in closely connected complexes where utilities, attic spaces, and shared ventilation can carry smoke and heat beyond the origin unit.

Assistance for displaced residents mobilized at the scene

The Phoenix Fire Department’s Community Assistance Program was requested to support residents displaced by the fire. The program provides on-scene crisis intervention and short-term case management, and coordinates with public and private partners in Maricopa County to connect affected residents with immediate resources.

  • Location: near 7th Street and Roosevelt, Phoenix
  • Time of initial dispatch: just before 1 a.m. Saturday
  • Building type: single-story apartment building with four units
  • Displacement: 11 residents
  • Injuries: none reported
  • Status: fire contained; cause under investigation
Firefighters combined interior suppression with unit-by-unit evacuations to account for residents and limit damage to adjacent structures.

Authorities have not announced when residents may be able to return, as habitability typically depends on damage assessments, restoration of utilities, and clearance of smoke and fire impacts. The fire investigation is expected to focus on the point of origin and the circumstances that allowed the fire to develop inside the unit before crews arrived.
