Maricopa County adds Mesa athletic complex to public measles exposure list as community transmission continues

Newly listed exposure site in Mesa
Public health officials in Maricopa County have added a new Phoenix-area location to the county’s list of places where members of the public may have been exposed to measles. The newly identified site is Arizona Athletic Grounds, a sports complex at 6321 S. Ellsworth Road in Mesa, with potential exposure in spectator areas around the baseball and softball fields, including bleachers and viewing areas.
The county’s public notice specifies two separate exposure windows tied to the same venue: January 23, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and January 24, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. People who were present during those times are advised to monitor for symptoms through February 14, 2026.
How this update fits the county’s broader outbreak response
Officials reported that the measles exposure associated with the Mesa site involved a person who is not a Maricopa County resident. At the same time, the county has stated that a local measles outbreak is underway with community transmission confirmed. The county’s public reporting indicates that the number of confirmed measles cases among Maricopa County residents remains three as of January 28, 2026.
Public exposure notifications are typically issued when potentially exposed individuals cannot be identified directly, allowing anyone who may have been in the same public setting to take precautions. Officials have also emphasized that measles virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infectious person leaves an area; as a result, the posted exposure windows include an additional two-hour period.
Other East Valley locations previously listed
In addition to the Mesa athletic complex, the county’s exposure list includes multiple locations in Gilbert with specified dates and times earlier in January. These include:
- Hale Theatre Arizona in Gilbert on January 5–9, 2026 (various evening and afternoon time ranges), with symptom monitoring advised through January 30, 2026.
- Target at 1515 E. Warner Road in Gilbert on January 13, 2026 (3:30 p.m.–5:45 p.m.), with monitoring advised through February 3, 2026.
- EOS Fitness at 3025 S. Val Vista Drive in Gilbert on January 13 and January 15, 2026 (4:45 a.m.–7:45 a.m. both days), with monitoring advised through February 5, 2026.
- Sam’s Club at 1225 N. Gilbert Road in Gilbert on January 15, 2026 (9:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m.), with monitoring advised through February 5, 2026.
What symptoms to watch for and what to do next
People who may have been exposed are advised to watch for symptoms and call ahead before seeking in-person medical care.
Health officials have highlighted common measles symptoms that may develop after exposure, including fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that often starts on the face. Individuals who develop symptoms after being at an exposure site during the listed windows are urged to limit contact with others and contact a healthcare provider in advance to reduce the risk of further spread in waiting rooms and other clinical settings.
The county has indicated it will continue updating the public exposure list as additional sites are identified during the ongoing investigation and response.
