Overview of Saturday Commute Conditions

Phoenix commuters and weekend travelers should prepare for significant disruptions this Saturday, February 7, 2026. A combination of major freeway maintenance projects and peak attendance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open is expected to create heavy congestion, particularly in the East Valley and North Scottsdale. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has issued several advisories for full ramp and freeway closures that will remain in effect through the afternoon.

Critical Freeway Closures and Restrictions

The most significant impact today is on the Santan Freeway. According to official ADOT reports, the following restrictions are active:

  • Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway): The freeway is closed between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Interstate 10 in Chandler. This closure is scheduled to remain in place until 2:00 p.m. today. Drivers are encouraged to use westbound Chandler Boulevard or the U.S. 60 as primary detours.
  • Eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) to SR 51: The ramp from the eastbound Loop 101 to southbound State Route 51 in Northeast Phoenix is closed for lane striping. This restriction, which also includes the southbound Black Mountain Boulevard ramp to the 51, is expected to lift at 3:00 p.m. today.
  • Loop 303 in Surprise: The southbound Loop 303 off-ramp at U.S. 60 (Grand Avenue) is closed until 9:00 a.m. for interchange improvements.
  • Lindsay Road: Both directions are closed at Loop 202 until 8:00 a.m., following overnight utility work.

Event Traffic: WM Phoenix Open and Renaissance Festival

Travelers should expect extreme delays in the North Valley due to the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. Saturday is historically the highest-attendance day for the tournament, with upwards of 200,000 fans expected. Traffic will be heaviest along the Loop 101 Pima Freeway between 7th Street and Pima Road, as well as on Hayden Road and Princess Drive. Additionally, the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series concludes tonight, which will result in heavy outbound traffic from the Scottsdale Sports Complex late this evening.

Further east, the Arizona Renaissance Festival kicks off its opening weekend today. Motorists traveling on U.S. 60 toward Gold Canyon should anticipate slower-than-usual speeds near the festival grounds throughout the morning and late afternoon.

Public Transit and Valley Metro Alerts

Valley Metro is operating on a standard Saturday schedule; however, commuters should be aware of the system-wide service changes that went into effect on January 26, 2026. These adjustments include schedule modifications for the Light Rail A Line and over 20 bus routes, including Route 72 (Scottsdale/Rural Rd) and Route 170 (Bell Rd). Riders are advised to check the updated transit books for specific timing to avoid missing connections during this high-traffic weekend.
