Morning Commute Overview

Welcome to your Monday morning traffic and commute update for February 2, 2026. While several major weekend construction closures have successfully wrapped up on schedule, new long-term restrictions in the West Valley and ongoing widening projects in the north are expected to impact travel times today. Drivers should plan for additional transit time, particularly in the Northwest Valley and North Phoenix corridors.

Major Weekend Closures Reopened

As of 5:00 a.m. this morning, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has confirmed that all major weekend freeway closures have reopened. Commuters can expect normal flow on the following routes that were restricted over the past few days:

  • Eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway): The stretch between Cave Creek Road and State Route 51 in North Phoenix is now fully open following ramp-widening work.
  • Westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway): The closure at Arizona Avenue in Chandler has been lifted, and all on-ramps at Gilbert, Cooper, and McQueen roads are back in service.
  • Southbound Loop 303: The on-ramp at US 60 (Grand Avenue) in Surprise has reopened following a weekend pavement project.

New Restrictions: 75th Avenue and Loop 101

Commuters in the West Valley need to be aware of a significant shift that began late Sunday night. As part of the ongoing $140 million Loop 101 widening project, 75th Avenue has been narrowed to just one through lane in each direction between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive. This restriction includes the 75th Avenue bridge over the Agua Fria Freeway. Crews are currently working to add a third left-turn lane for southbound traffic entering the eastbound Loop 101.

ADOT officials warn that these lane restrictions will remain in place for at least two months. Drivers who frequently use the 75th Avenue interchange should consider using 67th or 83rd avenues as alternate north-south routes to avoid heavy congestion during the morning and evening peaks.

Ongoing Construction Alerts

  • Loop 101 Northwest Valley: Expect narrowed lanes and a 55 mph speed limit between I-17 and 75th Avenue as crews continue work on new general-purpose lanes. Completion for this segment is currently targeted for 2027.
  • Loop 303 / I-17 Interchange: Be alert for heavy equipment and shifting traffic patterns near the I-17 and Loop 303 interchange in North Phoenix. The project to add direct freeway-to-freeway ramps is now fully underway.
  • I-10 Gila River Bridges: South of the Phoenix metro, work continues on the reconstruction of the Gila River bridges. While no immediate closures are reported for today, allow for slight delays during high-volume periods.

Weather and Safety Advice

Following one of the warmest Januaries on record, Phoenix is seeing unseasonably high temperatures to start February, with highs expected to reach the mid-70s. Drivers are encouraged to check tire pressure, as the record warmth and dry conditions can impact vehicle performance. With clear skies and high glare expected during the sunrise commute, ensure you have sunglasses ready for eastbound travel on I-10 and US-60.
