Phoenix Morning Commute Overview

Commuters across the Valley of the Sun should prepare for a mix of smooth highway travel and significant local bottlenecks this morning, Tuesday, February 3, 2026. While the major reconstruction projects on the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve and the Interstate 17 widening north of Phoenix have reached substantial completion, several new arterial projects and bridge rehabilitations are creating localized delays.

Major Arterial Alert: 7th Street Lane Reductions

Drivers using 7th Street to access the downtown core or I-10 should exercise caution. As of yesterday morning, northbound 7th Street has been narrowed to only two lanes between Roosevelt Street and McDowell Road. This restriction is part of the I-10 Cross-street Improvements Project and is scheduled to remain in place 24/7 until February 16. Commuters should expect heavy congestion during the morning peak and may want to use 3rd Street or 7th Avenue as north-south alternatives.

West Valley Update: 75th Avenue and Loop 101

In the West Valley, a major traffic enhancement project at the 75th Avenue interchange and Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) is now in full swing. 75th Avenue is currently narrowed to a single through lane in each direction between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive. These restrictions are necessary as crews work to add a third left-turn lane for southbound traffic entering the eastbound Loop 101. ADOT recommends using 67th or 83rd avenues to avoid the inevitable backups near the bridge through late morning.

Ongoing Regional Projects

  • I-10 Gila River Bridges: Work continues on the reconstruction of the I-10 bridges over the Gila River. While most work is occurring off the main travel lanes, intermittent shoulder closures and reduced speed limits are in effect between Phoenix and Casa Grande.
  • Loop 303 Widening: Initial phases of the Loop 303 expansion between I-17 and 51st Avenue are underway. Watch for construction vehicles and equipment entering the roadway near the I-17 interchange.
  • Photo Safety Cameras: The City of Phoenix has recently installed corridor speed cameras on several major roads, including Bell Road near I-17 and Camelback Road between 24th and 32nd streets. While the formal warning period begins later this month, drivers are urged to adhere to posted speed limits in these high-enforcement zones.

Public Transit and Weather

Valley Metro reports that light rail and bus services are operating on a regular weekday schedule today. No major disruptions have been reported for the South Central Extension or the Northwest Extension Phase II. However, with high winds and heavy rain forecasted through Wednesday, passengers should allow for extra walking time to stations and be prepared for potential minor delays due to weather-related road conditions.
