Eastbound Loop 202 Closed Through Chandler as Pavement Maintenance Continues This Sunday

Major Freeway Closures and Restrictions for Sunday, February 8
Commuters in the Phoenix metropolitan area should prepare for significant travel adjustments today. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has scheduled several critical maintenance and expansion projects that will impact flow on major arteries, particularly the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in the Southeast Valley. While the recently completed I-10 Broadway Curve project is providing a smoother experience for those traveling toward Sky Harbor, other regional projects will require careful planning this morning and afternoon.
Santan Freeway (Loop 202) Closures and Detours
The most significant impact today is on the eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway). The freeway is completely closed between the I-10 interchange and the Loop 101 Price Freeway in Chandler. This closure is necessary for essential pavement maintenance and is scheduled to remain in effect until 2:00 p.m. today. Drivers heading east from the Ahwatukee area or transitioning from the I-10 should consider the following options:
- Surface Street Detour: Use eastbound Chandler Boulevard or Pecos Road to bypass the closure.
- Freeway Alternative: Take the northbound Loop 101 to the eastbound US 60 to reach your destination.
- Dobson Road Access: The eastbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Dobson Road is closed until 10:00 p.m. tonight; use the Alma School Road on-ramp instead.
Additionally, the westbound Loop 202 remains narrowed to two lanes between Cooper and McQueen roads until noon today. This is part of the ongoing widening project aimed at improving long-term capacity in the Chandler and Gilbert corridor.
West Valley and North Phoenix Travel Alerts
In the West Valley, lane restrictions continue at the 75th Avenue interchange near Loop 101. As part of an ongoing $140 million improvement project, 75th Avenue is narrowed to one through lane in each direction between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive. This work zone includes the bridge over Loop 101, where crews are adding a third left-turn lane for southbound traffic. ADOT recommends using 67th Avenue or 83rd Avenue as alternate routes to avoid congestion.
In North Phoenix, drivers should note that while the I-17 widening project to Anthem is substantially complete, minor landscaping and final striping work may occasionally restrict shoulder access. However, no major main-line closures are reported for the I-17 corridor today, providing a relatively clear path for those heading to the high country.
Valley Metro Public Transit Updates

- Valley Metro Rail: Schedule adjustments for the A Line to improve frequency and reliability.
- Major Bus Routes: Updated timetables for Route 40 (Main St), Route 72 (Scottsdale Rd), and Route 170 (Bell Rd).
- Express Service: Modifications to several Chandler and Mesa express routes to accommodate shifting commute patterns.
Riders are encouraged to check their specific trip times on the Valley Metro app, as some Sunday departure times have shifted by several minutes to better align with regional connections.
