Driver arrested after allegedly running red light and crashing into Phoenix fire truck in west Phoenix

What happened
A driver was arrested after a collision in west Phoenix in which a civilian vehicle struck a Phoenix Fire Department truck near the intersection of North 75th Avenue and West Thomas Road. The crash happened at about 1 a.m. on a Sunday, and sent six people to hospitals as a precaution, including five firefighters who were riding in the fire truck.
Investigators said the civilian driver showed signs of impairment at the scene and was booked into jail. Police stated the driver is believed to have entered the intersection against a red light before the impact with the fire truck. The investigation remains ongoing.
Injuries and immediate response
Fire officials said all individuals involved were transported to hospitals for evaluation. Authorities did not publicly identify the civilian driver in initial reports and did not release specific information on the severity of injuries beyond the precautionary hospital transports.
Video from the scene showed front-end damage to the fire truck and damage along the passenger side of the civilian vehicle, consistent with a side-impact crash at an intersection.
Why the location matters
The crash occurred at an intersection that has repeatedly been the site of serious collisions, based on past public safety reports and prior crash investigations in the area. West Phoenix corridors with heavy traffic volumes, closely spaced signals, and late-night speeding have drawn periodic attention from city transportation and public safety officials, particularly where red-light compliance and impaired driving converge as risk factors.
Intersection crashes involving emergency vehicles tend to create heightened hazards for responders and the public because of the size and weight of fire apparatus and the presence of crews working inside and around the vehicle.
