Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in the Valley can expect a relatively steady flow this Wednesday morning, though several major long-term projects are beginning to impact daily routes. With the launch of several new infrastructure initiatives this week, drivers in the North and Southeast Valleys should leave extra time for their morning treks. Additionally, the recent implementation of new Valley Metro schedules means light rail and bus users should double-check their departure times before heading out to ensure they are synced with the newest adjustments.

North Valley and Loop 303 Restrictions

One of the most significant changes for North Phoenix drivers is the commencement of the Loop 303 Improvement Project. Starting this week, crews are active at the I-17 and Loop 303 interchange. This $129 million project aims to add direct freeway-to-freeway ramps and will eventually widen Loop 303 to three lanes in each direction out to 51st Avenue. Motorists should expect localized lane restrictions and shifting traffic patterns near the interchange, particularly during off-peak hours as equipment is staged for the expansion.

Southeast Valley and South Central Updates

  • Loop 202 (Santan Freeway): Work continues between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive. The project is currently at its halfway mark, with bridge widening and ramp reconstruction active. While most lanes remain open during the day, drivers should remain cautious of narrow lane configurations and reduced shoulder space.
  • I-10 Widening: The expansion project between Phoenix and Casa Grande remains a high-activity zone. Motorists should be prepared for lower speed limits and heavy machinery near the shoulder as ADOT works to add additional travel lanes.
  • Van Buren Street: Ongoing utility and road construction continues to affect local traffic and bus stops along Route 3.

Valley Metro Service and Detours

Valley Metro implemented its January 2026 service changes this past Monday, Jan 26. These adjustments affect the A Line and several high-volume routes including Thomas Road (Route 29), Main Street (Route 40), and Scottsdale Road (Route 72). For today, Wednesday, January 28, the following specific alerts are in place:

  • Mars and Mercury Detours: Construction near Terrace Road, Lemon Street, and Rural Road will cause detours for the Mars and Mercury Orbit routes between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM today.
  • Route 45: A detour is scheduled between Dobson and Price roads starting tonight at 9:00 PM, running through 5:00 AM tomorrow morning.
  • Roosevelt Storm Drain: The ongoing Phase 2 of the Roosevelt Storm Drain Construction Project continues to detour Route 68CM, with restrictions expected to last through May.

Commuter Safety Reminder

Following a serious collision involving a transit vehicle earlier this week near 51st Avenue and Buckeye Road, authorities are reminding all drivers to avoid using two-way turn lanes for passing and to remain vigilant at intersections. With the established two-line rail system now in full operation, stay alert for train movements from both the A and B lines at the Downtown Hub and south along Central Avenue.
