City Notices: Weekend Freeway Closures, Health Advisories, and 2026 Heat Response Plan

Transportation and Infrastructure Alerts

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) have announced several high-impact traffic restrictions effective Friday, February 27, 2026. Commuters are advised to plan for significant delays or utilize alternate routes.

  • Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) Closure: Eastbound lanes will be fully closed between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive starting at 10 p.m. this evening. This closure will remain in effect until noon on Sunday, March 1, to accommodate paving and widening work. On-ramps at McQueen, Cooper, and Gilbert roads will also be inaccessible during this time.
  • Local Street Restrictions: Partial closures continue at the intersection of 15th Street and Moreland Street for private development, with work scheduled to conclude late today. Ongoing utility and transportation work will also impact traffic at 16th Street and Deer Valley Road, as well as 19th Avenue near South Mountain Avenue, through the coming week.

Public Health and Safety Advisories

Maricopa County Public Health officials remain on high alert following confirmed cases of measles transmission within the community this month. The Maricopa County Health Alert Network (MCHAN) has verified active exposure sites across the valley. Residents are urged to review their immunization records and confirm they have received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Symptoms to watch for include high fever, cough, and a blotchy red rash, which typically appear seven to 12 days after exposure.

Additionally, the Phoenix Fire Department officially unveiled the 2026 Heat Response Plan on February 26. This robust initiative outlines the city's strategies for mitigating heat-related risks as spring approaches. The plan includes the expansion of cooling centers and enhanced emergency response protocols to protect vulnerable populations during extreme temperature events.

Public Meetings and Community Services

The city remains committed to transparent governance and provides the following notices for official meetings taking place today:

  • DDD District Central Independent Oversight Committee: A virtual public meeting is scheduled for today, February 27, at 10:00 a.m. The committee will discuss quality of care at medical facilities and behavioral health updates. Members of the public can participate via phone or the provided video link to offer comments on agenda items.
  • Aviation Notice: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has released spring travel tips to assist passengers with the anticipated increase in seasonal traffic. Travelers are encouraged to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and utilize the airport’s digital parking reservation system to ensure a smooth departure.
  • Parks and Recreation: While the Parks Board met yesterday, community members are reminded that applications are now open for over 200 lifeguard positions for the 2026 pool season. Local celebrations, including the Lunar New Year event at Deer Valley Community Center, are scheduled to begin Saturday evening.
