City Notices Roundup: Weekend Service Maintenance and Transit Advisories

Official City Website Maintenance Notice

The City of Phoenix has announced a scheduled maintenance window for its official website on Saturday, January 31, 2026. This routine system maintenance is scheduled to take place between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. While the city does not anticipate major disruptions to the overall digital infrastructure, certain online services, permit applications, and payment portals may be temporarily unavailable or experience intermittent connectivity issues during this twelve-hour period. Residents are encouraged to complete urgent online transactions before the maintenance begins or wait until after 7:00 PM to ensure successful submission of records and payments.

Weekend Freeway and Transit Restrictions

The Street Transportation Department and the Arizona Department of Transportation have issued several travel advisories for Saturday, January 31, and the surrounding weekend. Drivers should prepare for the following closures and restrictions:

  • Loop 101 (Pima Freeway): Eastbound lanes are closed between Cave Creek Road and State Route 51 from Friday night through 5:00 AM Monday for a ramp widening project. Detours include using southbound Cave Creek Road to eastbound Union Hills Drive or Bell Road.
  • Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway): A full closure is scheduled in both directions between Interstate 10 and Thomas Road starting at 9:00 PM on Saturday, January 31. This closure is required for overhead utility work and is expected to lift by 1:00 PM on Sunday.
  • Sky Harbor International Airport: Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will experience lane restrictions approaching the West Economy Parking Garage until 9:00 AM on Saturday. These restrictions are necessary for essential pavement improvements.
  • Loop 303: The southbound on-ramp at US 60 (Grand Avenue) in the northwest valley will remain closed for paving work until 9:00 AM on Saturday morning.

City Council Update: High-Capacity Transit Expansion

In a significant policy update this week, the Phoenix City Council voted to re-evaluate the proposed Capitol extension for the light rail system. Official notices indicate that the city will now prioritize the West Phoenix corridor along Indian School Road to meet the rising demand for mobility in Maryvale and surrounding neighborhoods. This decision allows Valley Metro to exit the current project development phase for the Capitol extension and pivot toward community engagement for the Indian School Road route. The council's shift aims to provide more localized control over transit solutions and ensure equitable access for residents in the West Valley.

Public Safety and Air Quality Status

The Phoenix Police Department has officially achieved National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) certification as of January 2026. This milestone enables the department to track enforcement activities with greater detail, providing the public with more transparent data regarding demographic and housing status in police contacts. Additionally, the department is launching a new annual in-service training program for all sworn officers this year, with a core focus on cultural awareness and customer service.

Regarding environmental health, the Maricopa County Air Quality Department reports that no air quality restrictions are currently in effect for Saturday, January 31. Wood burning and the use of off-road vehicles are permitted, as particulate levels are forecasted to remain within federal health standards.
