Public Health Advisory: Community Spread of Measles Confirmed

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health has issued a high-priority alert following the confirmation of community-acquired measles cases within the Valley. Health officials have identified multiple public exposure sites in the Gilbert area, including the EoS Fitness on Val Vista Drive, the Target on Warner Road, Sam’s Club on Gilbert Road, and the Hale Theatre Arizona. Residents who visited these locations between January 13 and January 15 are advised to monitor for symptoms—such as high fever, cough, and a distinct rash—through early February 2026. In response to the outbreak, the department recommends early MMR vaccination for infants aged 6 to 11 months and urges unvaccinated individuals to seek immunization immediately to prevent further transmission.

Traffic Alert: Weekend Freeway Restrictions and Road Closures

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has implemented several restrictions as part of ongoing freeway improvement projects, effective through the morning of Monday, January 26. Motorists should anticipate the following impacts:

  • Interstate 17: Both north and southbound lanes are narrowed to a single lane at various intervals between State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) and Anthem Way for lane striping. Northbound restrictions are active from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., while southbound restrictions occur from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday.
  • Loop 202 (Santan Freeway): Both directions of Arizona Avenue and Lindsay Road remain closed at the Loop 202 underpass for a widening project. These closures will persist until 5 a.m. Monday. Recommended detours include McQueen, Cooper, and Gilbert roads.

Public Safety: Phoenix PD Statement on Federal Agency Presence

In response to community concerns regarding the presence of federal agencies such as ICE and the National Guard, the Phoenix Police Department has released an official statement clarifying local protocols. The department emphasizes that Phoenix PD officers are required to identify themselves during the course of their duties and are prohibited from wearing full-face coverings. All uniforms must display visible department identifiers. Residents who encounter individuals claiming to be local law enforcement who refuse to provide identification are encouraged to contact the Phoenix PD hotline or call 911 in emergency situations.
