City Notice: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Updates and Leadership Appointments

Official Notice: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday Schedule
In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 19, 2026, the City of Phoenix has announced significant adjustments to municipal operations. Residents are advised that most City of Phoenix offices will be closed for the duration of the day. This closure includes City Hall, the Public Works Customer Contact Center, and administrative offices across various departments. Regular business operations are scheduled to resume at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
Solid Waste and Recycling Collection
Contrary to typical holiday adjustments, residential trash and recycling collection will remain on its regular schedule. Residents whose collection day is Monday should place their bins at the curb by the usual time. However, certain facilities and support services will experience closures:
- The 27th Avenue and North Gateway transfer stations will be closed on Monday, January 19.
- The Public Works Customer Contact Center will be closed; however, residents can continue to submit service requests via the myPHX311 digital portal.
Public Transportation and Parking Enforcement
Transit services will largely maintain a weekday rhythm, but travelers should note specific restrictions. Both the bus system and light rail will operate on a regular weekday schedule. There will be no Express or RAPID bus service available on the holiday. Additionally, the Ed Pastor, Sunnyslope, and Central Station transit centers will be closed. Dial-a-Ride service will remain available by reservation from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Regarding parking, the city has confirmed that all parking meters will be enforced from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., including throughout the holiday. Motorists are encouraged to pay at the meters or through mobile payment applications as they would on any other weekday.
Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Facilities
While Phoenix city parks and hiking trails will remain open for regular hours, all community centers and the S’edav Va’aki Museum will be closed on Monday. The city reminds trail users to follow the “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” safety guidelines, particularly during midday hours. All Phoenix Public Library locations will also be closed, though book drops and digital resources remain accessible 24/7.
Public Service Announcement: New Interim Leadership
Effective Monday, January 19, 2026, the City of Phoenix transitions to new leadership within two critical departments. Ilse Borquez assumes the role of Interim Government Relations Director, and Martin Whitfield begins his tenure as the Interim Parks and Recreation Director. These appointments, announced by the City Manager, are intended to maintain continuity in essential community advocacy and recreation services during the transition period.
